INVEST Pre-Screening Questionnaire

Thank you for your interest in potentially being a volunteer for the INVEST in Bone Health study! The INVEST study is researching if wearing a weighted vest while losing weight, affects the loss of muscle and bone that happens with weight loss, compared to traditional resistance training, in participants 60-85 years of age.

The INVEST study lasts approximately 12 months. All participants will receive meal replacement products (provided at no cost to you). The study will be using OPTAVIA® meal replacements, which include: bars, shakes, soups, and crunchy snacks, among others. If eligible, you will get the opportunity to try these products before enrolling in the study. Also, you will be asked to attend weekly in person diet intervention sessions led by a dietician for the first 6 months, and then every other week for the second 6 months. During these sessions, you will learn about healthy eating and other weight control strategies to help stay on a meal plan. Diet session days are either on Wednesdays from 9:15-10:15AM or 10:30-11:30AM, or Thursdays from 9-10:00AM, depending on which group you are placed in. Participants who qualify for the study must be willing to be assigned at random to 1 of 3 groups: weight loss only, weight loss + weighted vest, or weight loss + resistance training.

Those assigned to the WL & Vest group will attend the diet classes and be asked to wear the weighted vest (under or over your shirt) on a daily basis, progressing to a goal of 8 non-consecutive hours per day.

Those assigned to WL & Resistance training group will be asked to participate in the diet classes and attend an onsite, supervised resistance-training program 3 days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30AM - 12:30PM or 2:45PM-5:00PM, at a Wake Forest University facility in Winston-Salem, NC.

As a reminder, you would be randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups. It’s like the flipping of a coin.

Before being randomized, you will be asked to complete up to four screening visits to make sure you are eligible for the study. Two of the screening visits are at Wake Forest University, one is remote by phone (as needed), and one is at Wake Forest Baptist Health. Each visit will last approximately 2 hours. There will be a total of up to 8 study visits.
